Pallavi Raveendran #rolestroll_13

"If at once they clip your wings,  fly again."
Movie - Uyare

Almost all the relationship breakups and failures we have seen on celluloid are from the perspective of a man ;about his ordeals and self discovery journeys. More than being about a journey of a acid attack survivor who was attacked and disfigured by her boyfriend, its a story about a woman coming in terms with the toxic relationship which she continuously defended her all life. Pallavi had a childhood dream of becoming a pilot and her school sweetheart helped her at a little to get her into an aviation school. She took this gesture of his as an emotional debt that she had to repay her entire life. Despite being independent, ambitious and strong headed she belies her abusive and suffocating relationship. She misconstrues the dominance and mistreatment by her partner as mere possessiveness and excessive concern. His male chauvinist boyfriend Govind has absolute control on her from what to wear, where to go, what to speak and whether to work if she earns more than him. The abuse she endures is not just physical but also mental and emotional. She is crippled to yield to all his decisions and judgements and hopelessly looking for any fragment of love that is still left between them. When she ends the relationship she is gifted a permanent scarred face in return. While battling through court case there is a point where Govind offers to settle by marrying her showing what extreme of depravity and insouciance one can fall into. There is a scene in the film on plane when Pallavi had a chance to throw hot cup of tea on his assaulter's face but she threw water instead showing no amount of inflicted pain and injustice will reduce her to his level. There is a  constant struggle to overcome all the problems that a blemish on her face incurred upon her and pursue her dream with utter stubbornness. Her dream to be able to fly is maybe a metaphor to free herself from the shackles of injustice,  inequality and the superficial norms of beauty that the world offers.
